Dear neighbors,
Thank you for your show of support last week when so many of you came out of your homes to observe the nightly sounding of "Taps." Many of you know the story, but for those who don't: I bagan playing
Taps a year ago after I stopped in to check on our neighbor Charli o see if he was doing all right and find out if there was anything he needed during the lockdown. He told me that he was fine, but if I would do him one favor, he asked if I would provide a moment of comfort by playing Taps at sunset. That's what started a nightly ritual that many of you can hear if you are outside or if your windows are open.
So I was taken by surprise and frankly a bit overwhelmed to see so many out and waiting for me last Monday, and your outpouring of gratitude in the form of Thank You cards and other gifts was truly heart-warming. The sentiments that were expressed in your thoughtful words have made it clear that this bit of tradition has provided a moment of calm and reflection amidst these turbulent times, and your artwork and words--as well as seeing your faces gathered around--made me understand that my gift has been of value to you.
I have occasionally been asked how long I intend to keep up, and I have given a variety of respondes, usually gauged against how our battle against this pandemic is faring. At present, I am still touched to know that the neighborhood have found it to be meaningful in ways that are unique and personal to each of you, and with that in mind, I don't have an
'exit strategy' in place. For now, I intend to keep the tradition going until I get a sense that it is time to stop. Thank you all again for your warm support.
With warmest regards, Paul
