elisooker HA# Last year 6000 bears were killed after being captured in traps intended for deer and boar management.
These pictures are of sow bear Uni, who featured in a photo I've previously posted. They were taken when she was miscaptured in a leg hold trap, from which we thankfully managed to free her from without any damage to her leg.
While managing deer and boar populations has, unfortunately, become a necessity since the extinction of Japanese wolves, I can't help wondering, isn't there more we can do to avoid the bycatch of bears and other protected animals?
I've recently been discussing with Ranger friends back in NZ as I begin studying to take a trap license test in
Japan myself. Having a hunting license is an advantage for conservation jobs in Japan, and could provide a more eco-friendly way of eating meat while helping to keep the ecosystem in balance. Overall, I want to encourage people towards this kind of hunting...
However the more I study, the more I think hunting methods in Japan need re-assessment. Leg hold traps are no longer legal for most pest control in New
Zealand, and the box trap alternatives seem much better but are less common due to size and price. Then there is the problem of budget and professionals who are able to free miscaptured bears, which results in them simply being shot. If you have any young people in your life, please encourage them to take on a career in conservation! And spread awareness of things that need changing
