
Today at the zoo it was my job to clean the flamingo pond and feed the African Flamingos.
Shorter in stature to the American flamingos and a little less pink, they are commonly known as lesser flamingos to zoologists. They filter feed on a blue-green algae called Spirulina while their head is literally upside down. Hence the beak shape.
It's the algae that gives these birds their color.
