I received an Eco-Sphere for Christmas this year. I remember seeing one of these ~15 years ago or so and wanting one ever since then but couldn't justify the cost of them. They are a bit pricey for what you get but can last anywhere from 2-15 years.
These are a fully self sustaining eco-system enclosed in a glass container. They require moderate light but not direct sunlight. They also require a temperature range between 60°F and 85°F.
The sphere contains different items to make it sustainable. Shrimp, algae, coral, rock, shells. Between these and with the right amount of light, everything inside the dome flourishes and sustains an everlasting cycle (Until all of the shrimp die of course).
This is a pricey item which is why I never purchased one for myself. For the 5.25" small pod shown it is $79.99.
It is still a really cool item though that some folks out there might not know about. Merry Christmas everyone!
