I cannot stress this enough - THIS IS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY that requires immediate surgical intervention. If you notice any of the following symptoms in your dog following a meal, get them to the vet immediately:
Restlessness
Enlarged abdomen
Pacing
Unproductive vomiting
Drooling
Crying/howling
Belly that sounds like a drum when you tap on it
The German Shepherd appeared to be a straightforward operation, but once the surgeons entered the abdomen, it was discovered that the blood supply had been cut off from the stomach and spleen for so long that they had become necrotic (the tissue had died due to lack of blood flow). 40% of the stomach was removed, along with the entire spleen. The good news is, the dog survived!
But Phatblaster5000, what can I do to prevent this happening to my dog?
I’m glad you asked, Jimmy.
