HISTORY HUSTLE Lincoln was a cat lover and brought stray cats home. Once, an admiral during the siege of Petersburg saw Lincoln "tenderly caressing three stray kittens" saying, "kitties, thank God you are cats, and can't understand this terrible strife that is going on." He was given two kittens, Tabby and Dixie, and once fed Tabby from the table at a formal White House dinner. When his wife objected, he replied, "If the gold fork was good enough for former President James Buchanan, I think it is good enough for Tabby."
